Short description of the pilot

Within European cities one can observe two interrelated processes (re-urbanisation and fragmentation) which build and reconstruct the shape or morphology of urban areas and the structure of social interaction within the temporary city.

In this context we will survey the issue if the everyday needs of the older people can be satisfied in their residential area. So our project can be called as a form of feasibility study for dedicated infrastructure of elderly people in specific urban areas. This is followed by the question in which way different parts of the city are affected by the process of aging and which are the consequences in a spatial perspective.

The prerequisite for this approach is a social area analysis, that includes the socio-economic status on the one hand, and the demographic structure on the other hand. This analysis allows us to understand the demographic and social processes in Hamburg and to identify areas of inquiry in Hamburg which are heavily affected by aging processes.

By the inquiry we want to find out more about the action space, the everyday needs and the assessment of the residential area as well as the social structure in different urban areas.

The project aims at improving general insights and practical local knowledge about promising and sustainable ways how change or rebuild the urban material structure and stimulate social interactions and learning processes in relation to the challenges of demographic change.
