Provision of services

Provision of public services, labour market composition and supply of housing aimed at different segments of the population can influence migration in and out of regions and municipalities, with lasting effects on population seize and composition. Vice versa, if population falls below certain tresholds, maintaining provisions becomes a real challenge. Several European regions have whitnessed a spiral effect in which services withdrew from local communities as population declined, causing even more people to leave from those communities, until a point was reached where the critical mass for substinence of the community was no longer there.

Such extreme cases are not apparent in the DC-Noise partner regions, but in the small survey among 7 regions factors such as poor facilities for transport and mobility, larger shares of housing needing repair, and shortage of institutions for higher education are linked to population stagnation.
