Unexplored pathways – New ZeelandIn 2008 the province of Zeeland published ‘Unexplored Pathways’ (Onverkende Paden), a paper about the consequences of demographic change. The paper consists of a thorough demographic analysis. In short: the population of Zeeland will decline in 20 years and some regions are already declining. The main demographic trend in Zeeland however, the change in the proportion of different age-groups (ageing). The effects of this will be of influence on a wide range of policy fields the provincial authorities bear responsibility for. In this respect, attention at an early stage is considered vital in successfully anticipating on demographic change. The publication of Unexlored Pathways has provided a platform for discussion, and is at the same time a tool to create awareness among other actors. The follow-up is a broader campaign called Nieuw! Zeeland (New Zeeland) which is more focused on communication, and encourages local governments, companies and citizens to take part in an active and positive dialogue, and to brainstorm about sustainable solutions for demographic change (www.nieuwzeeland.nu). This process is closed phase 1 (discussion with professionals), in 2009 the second phase (discussion with the public) is started. In October 2009 a strategy about demographic change will be ready.. At the same time, the provincial efforts in the field of spatial, economic and social development remain focused on the gathering of knowledge, and the search for practical solutions. Demographic change becoming more and more a significant point of attention in all provincial activities, in the end all future developments will be 'demography proof'.
