The Grey Matter in Zeeland - review

“The Grey Matter” is one of the demonstration pilots in the Province of Zeeland and was first presented in the project meeting in Middelburg in December last year. The Grey Matter (De Grijze Massa in Dutch) is a foundation consisting of a group of entrepreneurs and schools whose main task is to find answers to the negative consequences of the aging labour force in private companies. The main aim of the pilot is to communicate the experiences and results of the project companies and schools in the Netherlands.

While other pilots within DC NOISE aim at senior employees and their competence in the public sector (regions and municipalities), The Grey Matter concentrate the activities among several private companies. Combat the loss of knowledge in companies, safeguarding the core knowledge and making available and disseminate this knowledge within companies are core objectives in the pilot.

An important part of the activities in the pilot is the communication of the progress and the results. Other DC NOISE partners present at the conferences, the first one in March 2010, will contribute to an important transnational approach. The partners will also have full accessibility of the results of the research project. Another important output is the network of people and organizations working with labour market and related topics.

The peer review panel recommends that the intended results of projects are better defined. Furthermore the arguments for enterprises to take part in the project must be clarified. The development, production and dissemination of documents must be in English for transnational transfer and benefit.

The Grey Matter launches a fully operational website with an extranet in December. This extranet can function as a community of practice, where the partners in DC NOISE can contribute and exchange knowledge regarding the topic. The participating companies are content with the results from the pilot-projects. These results will be presented in the march 2010 congress in Vlissingen. The Grey Matter has developed together with The university of applied sciences of Vlissingen 3 methods to contain the loss of knowledge in companies. These methods are tested and in a Beta Version. The first method is a knowledge risk analysis, the second Hyper Video and the third is the in depth interview for leaving experts There are two main streams of research , the stream for white collar workers and the stream for blue collar workers, the in depth interview is applicable on the white collar workers and the hypervideo on blue collar workers. The planning is to continue the project for another two years after the congress in March to develop the Beta versions into a working open source solution.
