Places of the futureSecond Regional Talk in the region of Bremen The 3rd of June Kommunalverbund – in cooperation with Weser Kurier, the biggest regional newspaper – organised the second regional talk in Syke. It served as the kick-off for the competition “places of the future – only with networks”. In front of about 40 people Detlev Söffler (responsible for the regional monitoring pilot) gave a short introduction about the demographic situation in the region. He mentioned that the population in total will decrease by about 5.000 people up to the year 2020. But at the same time the number of school children will decrease by 27.000 children – which means the loss of 900 classes. Susanne Krebser, managing secretary of Kommunalverbund, invited people to participate in the competition and to tell other people about it. You can find the papers for the competition – only in German: www.kommunalverbund.de The main part of the meeting was a panel discussion with people with very different backgrounds. There were three representatives from municipalities, two from the region of Bremen one from the city of Altena which is already strongly affected by the demographic change. Its population decreased from about 30.000 in 1970 to below 20.000 right now. Furthermore we had invited two representatives from the health and care sector. Besides we organized two events in the city of Bremen: “Aging in the district” and “Labour Culture Education”. They put the focus rather on urban aspects referring to the level of districts. Again Detlev Söffler and Susanne Krebser started with the presentation of the demographic development and the introduction of the competition. The panels were staffed with representatives of institutions and initiatives in Bremen: housing association, neighbourhood and cultural initiatives as well as the sports alliance and the information centre for education and labour. About 80 people came to each event, which was a good success. The events gave the opportunity to bring different people and stakeholders together, initiate the exchange among them and at the same time promote the competition.
