Increasing mobility for the elderly in demographic hit quarters in Hamburg
Life expectancy in Germany is increasing. Already one quarter if Hamburg’s citizens are 60 years or older. As a consequence, residential environments and public open spaces are assessed regarding their suitability for the elderly. Aim is to make green corridors and footpaths more easy accessible for older people. DC Noise provides the opportunity to work on the Altona district in Hamburg to survey the needs for elderly (including a significant group of first generation immigrants) and their perception of public spaces. This approach is based on prior experience following two earlier pilot projects in the city, to adapt footpaths, parks and other space in close consultation with older inhabitants.
