Empty Country and Lively Cities?

Berlin, 7./8. May 2009

In the beginning of May the international conference “Empty Country and Lively Cities” was organised in Berlin by four notable German research institutes. It gave an overview over the current status of theoretical and empirical research regarding the relations between demographic change and spatial development in Europe. The range of topics was very broad, in total there were 12 different sections. The scientists put the focus on three different perspectives: a comparative international, mainly European perspective, a sectoral perspective on the effects the demographic change has for example on housing, technical infrastructure or education and the perspective of planning and policy.
